Biography                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Hamed Ketabdar is a Senior Research Scientist at Quality and Usability Group, Deutsche Telekom Laboratories (T-Labs), Berlin, Germany. His main topic of research in T-labs is context aware applications for mobile phones. In order to recognize context, different modalities such as audio and sensory data are used. Recognition of context is then used to enhance behaviour and functionality of mobile phones, as well as designing new applications for security, health care and monitoring purposes. He received his PhD in Automatic Speech Recognition from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne (EPFL). He was a research assistant in Speech group of Idiap Research Institute (www.idiap.ch) from 2004 to 2008. During PhD studies, his research has been mainly on using artificial neural networks for acoustic modelling in speech recognition systems.
Projects

MagiThings is a new interaction technique for efficient use of the 3D space around a mobile device. Our proposed method is based on using the magnetic sensor (compass) integrated in the new generation of mobile devices (e.g. iPhone 3GS, 4G and Google Nexus One) and using it for interacting with the user. By taking a properly shaped (rod, ring, pen, etc.) permanent magnet in hand, users can make coarse gestures in the 3D space surrounding the device and change the magnetic field pattern that effects the magnetic sensor of the device. These effects, then, can be used by the phone to perform certain tasks, based on the pattern of the movement. These tasks can vary from entering a text or digit into the phone to turning pages or zooming while reading an e-book. This novel, gesture-based interaction framework opens a new chapter in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and has numerous applications such as gaming, authentication, text/digit entry, music playing and remote controlling of smart homes to name a few. Thus far, we have implemented some of these applications and have named them MagiTact, MagiWrite, MagiAudio, MagiGame and so on, according to their usage.

Hierarchical Multimodal Interface (HMI) is

another active project that deals with detecting anomalies in the physical activities of a user and contacting a remote station (by calling or texting) upon detection of an emergency situation such as being in an accident or collapsing. This framework uses a multimodal interface to monitor the physical activities of a user and provides a designated emergency center with information about the user's location and the emergency situation. This application is especially helpful in the field of Assistive Technology (AT) where the user is prone to such accidents and due to a permanent physical handicap or temporal disability incurred after the accident needs emergency assistance.
Besides its application in AT, HMI has other applications in entertainment and physical training as well.
